A retail sales and use tax of 4% is imposed by the state, with Hill City imposing an additional 2%, or 3% for Food and Beverage.

Unemployment Insurance

South Dakota has one of the lowest unemployment insurance rates in the nation. Employers pay from .00 to 7.7 percent of the first $9,000.00 in wages paid to each employee during a calendar year. The rate for new employers is 1.9% the first and 1.7% for the second and third years if they maintain a positive balance. Thereafter, the rate is based on experience, the average rate is .8%.
