A little history about our town.

Our friendly, modern, mountain town, provides a great vacation headquarters for exploring the natural wonders of the Black Hills. Hill City is known as the "Heart of the Hills" which is derived from its close proximity to both the geographical center of the Black Hills, and the local tourist destinations.

From here it is only 13 miles to Mt Rushmore, 9 miles to Crazy Horse, 45 miles to Deadwood. The Rapid City airport is 30 miles. Hill City is a perfect center area to all the big attractions of the Black Hills area.

Hill City is the oldest existing city in Pennington County and had a population of 926 as of the 2010 census. Hill City is located 26 miles southwest of Rapid City on State Highway 16 and on U.S. Route 385 that connects Deadwood to Hot Springs.

The city has its roots in the Black Hills mining rush of the late 1800s. Tin mining was dominant in the 1880s and led to an influx of capital and people into the area. As the mining industry subsequently waned, tourism and timber became increasingly important to the area. With the establishment of Mount Rushmore in the 1940s, Custer State Park, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the Black Hills became known as a tourist destination which Hill City benefited from. In recent years the city has diversified to become a center for the arts in the area featuring man art studios, galleries and festivals.

Hill City has a interesting history and some controversy that took place within the city.

The history of the Black Hills region begins with the mining rush that took place during the late 1800s. Tin mining because quite the rage in the 1880s and caused many people to settle in the area. However, as mining became less of a factor – the land experienced timber and tourism as their main draws.

Hill City would later benefit from the advancements of Black Hills, as Mount Rushmore became established in the 1940s, Custer State Park, as well as the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The city would grow to offer many different tourist activities, including art festivals and competitions.
